Your questions answered

What's the difference between Mobile Broadband and National broadband?
Mobile Broadband is good for getting online when you're away from home. It's not as fast as National Broadband, which means it's not as good for downloading lots of information, like TV shows and music. But it's good for checking your email, browsing the internet and getting onto Facebook when you're away from your PC at home. Back to top
How fast can I go with Mobile Broadband?
Download speeds for mobile broadband vary depending on which network you connect to as you move around, and though it won't be as fast as the National Broadband in your home, it's great for most online tasks apart from downloading large files like films and TV shows. Back to top
What is a gigabyte or GB?
GB is short for 'gigabyte', which is a chunk of data. Everything which is sent over the Internet is made up of chunks of data, whether it is a web page, an email, a music track or video clip.
If 8 Bits of data = 1 Byte, then
  • 1024 bytes of data = 1 Kilobyte (KB), then
  • 1024 KB of data = 1 Megabyte (MB), then
  • 1024 MB of data = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
Of course, each involves a different amount of data - the average email (without attachments) is around 4 KB, whereas digital photographs are around 1 MB. An MPEG3 music file is around 3-4MB. Back to top
